CAS to rule on Senegal’s appeal against Morocco’s AFCON title by November

CAS to rule on Senegal’s appeal against Morocco’s AFCON title by November

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is expected to deliver its ruling by the end of November on Senegal’s appeal against the decision to strip the country of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Morocco.

In a statement, the Lausanne-based court said a hearing on the Senegalese Football Federation’s appeal against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation was held behind closed doors on October 8.

“The Panel have begun and continue their deliberations,” CAS said.

The dispute stems from the AFCON final played on January 18 in Rabat, Morocco, where Senegal defeated the hosts 1-0 after extra time.

With the match still goalless in stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a penalty following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, prompting Senegal’s players to temporarily walk off the pitch in protest.

Play eventually resumed after a lengthy interruption, but Morocco’s Brahim Diaz missed the penalty with a Panenka-style attempt that was saved by Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Senegal went on to secure victory through Pape Gueye, who scored in extra time to give his country a 1-0 win.

However, on March 17, CAF’s Appeal Board overturned the result following an appeal by Morocco, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match by leaving the pitch without authorisation.

The board subsequently awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory and the AFCON title, citing Articles 82 and 84 of the competition’s regulations.

Senegal challenged the decision at CAS on March 25, seeking to overturn CAF’s ruling and have the country reinstated as African champions.

The ruling, expected by the end of November, will determine the outcome of Senegal’s appeal and the ongoing dispute over the 2025 AFCON title.
